The Acorn Club

Description

The Friendswood Academy organized a literary society called The Acorn Club in 1902. The membership consisting of current academy students and teachers and as well as associated community members over the age of 14 that were approved by majority vote by the society. The object of the society was to provide opportunities for members to practice parliamentary procedure, public speaking, and advance their skills in debate and literature. The programs included debates, parodies, original stories, soliloquies, impersonations, charades, continued stories, vocal and instrumental, solos and groups, current events, chalk talks, book reviews, scientific demonstrations, readings in French, Latin or Spanish, and extemporaneous speeches according to the description found on page 46 in the Friendswood: A Settlement of Friendly Folks book. Minutes and attendees of the meetings were recorded.
